Background 

In 2010, a letter and survey was sent to  all Chiefs of Dentistry and/or Program Directors of one – year Hospital Dental Residency / Internship programs in Canada, to solicit their opinions regarding (a) a unified date to make offers to the Canadian hospital dental residency programs and (b) making offers to Program via the National Matching  Service. At that time, the consensus was to create a unified date and process for offers, but there was very little interest in pursuing a national match through the Canadian Residency Match System (CARMS).

In 2011, a letter was sent to ACFD with a request to coordinate the match for GPR Programs, as they were doing this for Canadian OMFS Programs at the time. ACFD replied that they were unable to perform this type of service due to development costs and limited services.

In 2012, all Canadian GPR Program Directors agreed to a common release date and processes, with the date being several weeks after the scheduled  OMFS release dates. Initially, there were a few glitches, but the GPR Directors worked in a collegial fashion with this process for the next three years.

At the CAHD meeting on May 29, 2015, it was decided that with the formation of CAHD, there now exists an appropriate mechanism for developing more robust processes, including stewardship and oversight, for the selection process. CAHD will investigate and develop a  proposal for a national electronic match system.

 Purpose:

To investigate and develop a proposal for an ethical, robust, inclusive and transparent national match process for Canadian hospital-based postgraduate dental trainees, to be implemented in the 2016-17 academic year.

Background

It is the intention of CAHD to allocate time at each AGM to a scientific component. The mission of CAHD includes promotion of the highest standards of evidence-based oral health care, advancement  dental education in academic health sciences centres and encouragement of collaborative research. Guiding principles of CAHD include collaboration, with free sharing of knowledge and information, and inclusivity of all interested Canadian dentists. In particular, CAHD wants to encourage dental residents, as future leaders in hospital dentistry,  to participate in CAHD. To this end, a resident oral abstract session will be introduced to the 2016 AGM.     

 Purpose:

To develop a protocol for abstract submission and selection.
To oversee the abstract process for annual meetings
