“There is a looming crisis with antibiotics,” says Dr. Susan Sutherland, Chief of Dentistry at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry.

While the vast majority of antibiotics prescribed in Canada are by physicians, a new study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association depicts an exponential increase in prescriptions by dentists in one Canadian province. It’s an alarming trend that the Canadian Association of Hospital Dentists (CAHD) – a new organization aimed at bringing awareness to issues relevant to hospital dentistry, the dental profession and patients – hopes to combat through the creation of a national stewardship program.
